Topics: Globalisation – good or bad

Work through the exercises carefully – make sure you can USE the language – not only UNDERSTAND it.

(1) Read the text below carefully.

In recent years globalisation has had an important effect on all our lives. The clothes we wear, the food we eat, the cars we drive: they arrive in our towns and cities from all over the world. At the same time, we listen to the same music, watch the same films and go to the same places on holiday.

Some people think that this is a bad thing because all the transport involved is damaging to the environment, local customs and traditions are replaced by a “universal culture”, and there are fewer differences between people and societies.

In my opinion this is completely wrong. Globalisation gives people choices, it allows many things to be produced at a reasonable price, and it allows countries to develop by trading with other countries in markets in which they are competitive. As they develop more these markets change. A visit to a local supermarket, or an electronics shop, brings us into contact with goods from all over the world. I believe that this is a fantastic and positive consequence of globalisation.

Topics: Home schooling – good or bad

Work through the exercises carefully – make sure you can USE the language – not only UNDERSTAND it.

(1) Read the text below carefully.

Some people sincerely believe that it is a good idea to educate their children at home. They feel that their children can learn more effectively, that they can progress at their own speed, and that their children will avoid some of the more negative aspects of school. These can include bullying by other pupils, poor teaching, drugs, bad language, and a hostile attitude towards learning.

Whilst I can understand some of these ideas, I think that the decision to home school is extremely unwise. School is not only about academic skills, but also about social skills – learning to develop good working relationships with a wide variety of people. In their future working lives our children will have to do this and it is important to learn these essential skills when they are young. In common with the rest of the world schools are not perfect, but if the school is really terrible, then changing school would be a more reasonable solution to the problem than abandoning schools completely.

(2) Listen to me read the text:

There are various ways you can use this:

Listen and read / Just listen / listen and repeat

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

(3) Express yourself:

(1) What were the negative aspects of your school?

(2) Pick one – expand it – give an example (now you should have an interesting paragraph).

(1) Try the dictation below:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

(2) Check your answer.

If you have made mistakes you should repeat the exercise later.

(3) Express yourself:

(1) Think about a positive aspect of your school.

(2) Expand the thought.

(3) Add an example.

This is a very easy way to build a paragraph:

“One of the positive apsects of my secondary school was that the class sizes, especially in the sixth form, were quite small. This meant that in the classroom we had the chance to talk and discuss our ideas at length. In my history group, for example, there were about 8 of us and I remember very clearly having long interesting discussions with our teacher, Joe Fyles, about the causes of the English Civil War in the seventeenth century. Even today, and it was a long time ago, I think back to these classes with pleasure. We became a very close group and during the summer holidays we continued our lessons at the teacher’s house – he freely gave up his summer, and we gave up ours! Incredible!”

Note: the structure is very simple – any idea will do!

(1) Complete the gaps in the text below:

(3) Develop ideas:

In paragraph 1 it says that some people like home schooling because “they feel their children can learn more effectively”

Develop the idea be expanding and giving an example.

Note: this is not difficult – do not search for an unusual idea.

This is my example:

“One of the reasons why some people think that home schooling is a good idea is that they feel their children can learn more effectively. In a normal school the teacher cannot give a lot of time to any individual child, whereas at home the parent or tutor can focus on the particular childs needs, and help with any difficulties. One hour of indivdual attention in this way is probably more than normal school children receive in a day. At school I had to study Latin, but in the first year I got behind with the course and found it verydifficult to catch up later. If I had had personal tuition this would not have happened and my personal needs would have been identified much sooner.”

(1) Find and correct the 10 mistakes in the text below.

Some people sincerly believe that it is a good idea to educate their children at home. They feel that there children can learns more effectively, that they can progress by their own speed, and that their children will avoid some of the more negative aspect of school.
