S1A7: In your country did people in the past keep in contact in the same ways as they do today?

(1) Short answer: not a speech but try to make more that one point.

“It varies a lot – and it depends on how far “in the past” you mean. Lots of young people use Facebook – but my parents don’t. Everyone has a mobile – and they have for at least the last 10 years. Of course, 30 years ago – they didn’t.”

(2) If you have some nice collocations – use them!

“The mobile phone had a enormous impact on XXX society – everyone has and we can keep in touch -and text each other – at any time. That’s the single biggest change over the last 20 years.”

With the advent of new technology, communication in my country has changed enormously. In the past, people are not as often communicating each other because during that time it took a long time to be able to keep in contact with any person. Unlike nowadays, with the presence of many social networks, mobiles phones, communication become very accessible to many.

  2. DEEPIKA G.K says:

Thanks paul. That is very kind of you. You are a gifted teacher.

  3. DEEPIKA G.K says:

Actually there has been revolution the way we communicating today,Compared to the past there are enormous differences in communication. Technical innovation has allowed us to keep in touch with friends ,family members via face book and nother advanced social net wort sites. And smart mobile phones and tablet computers secure our global connectivity even more than ever before. But in the past our parents used to share informations just through more time consuming modes such as letters ,telegrammes.

    • Paul says:

Good Deepika – but try to answer FEWER questions and spend MORE TIME developing a good answer for each. Quality not quantity is the key to success.

  4. kanika kohli says:

Of course there is a lot of difference in communication from in the past to nowadays as in the past people talk face to face and today we communicate through facebook.we can keep in touch with our families and friends through mobile phone and now,we even dnt have to speak, simply a text would rather convey our messages.Gone are the days when international calls were expensive as now cheaper calls could be easily made. Moreover, through web cams we can easily meet anyone without keep in mind ,the distance. All this is been driven by technology and Scientific breakthroughs.

    • Paul says:

This is a mixture of good and not so good kanika. Never use moreover – all students do it, and it’s completely unnatural. The idea is clear enough but lot of the construction goes wrong eg “..there is a lot of difference between the ways we communicated in the past and the ways we do now” – you want to keep a parallel structure with both halves of the comparison having the same grammatical form. OR ” we can communicated our message by simply sending a text” (you have a lot of the correct words but in the wrong order!) “we can easily meet anyone without keep in mind” – is not English! Still – there are some good collocations – try READING more – it will give you a better feel – do the reading exercises on the website (and get the Language Building book if you want to work on natural language).

  5. Mohamed Al Hosainy says:

Of course there is a great difference between how the Egyptians were communicating ten or fifteen years ago and now. Land lines and letters were the main use of contact along with telegraphs sometimes, but now we hardly ever use letters or telegraphs between families and friends. We would rather use cell phones to call or to text, also emails and social networks are very popular now especially among younger Egyptians.

    • Paul says:

Good Mohamed – but be careful with the details of grammar and vocabulary: “how Egyptians communicated …. ” / ..letters were the main ways that people kept in contact”

Try the daily news reading if you want to improve your vocabulary and awareness of natural collocations.

I rewrite it,hope not too many mistakes.I am really sorry, sometimes,i did not know what mistake is,because my English is so poor. But i will try.
The way in which people keep in touch nowadays is totally different to that people used in the past.20 years ago, people use letter, telegraph and telephone. Then, thanks to the progress of technology, the mobile phone and network have become two vital ways in which people keep in touch with each other. Different to the elders, particularly, young people use net work which is very convenient linking to social society.,I think it is the biggest change over the last 20 years.

    • Paul says:

Good try yinging. Some points: “it totally different (TODAY) from IN THE PAST ” – the two things you are comparing is NOW and BEFORE – keep the comparison direct. “People USED” past tense. “Then..” is about the past so you need to use the PAST TENSE. If you use NOW you could put the present perfect “have become” – which you used. The phrase beginning “young people..” is not clear.

This is a good try yingying and you are getting better. Keep going.

  7. yingying jin says:

Of course,it varies a lot and depends on progress of technology. In the past, people contact each other by letters ,telegraph and telephone.Nowdays, mobile phone and Internet have a enormous impact on our society.Everyone has mobile phone and keep in touch with others by it at any time. Different to the elders, particularly, young people have the habit of using Internet to contact others. It is very convenient and cheap,I think it is the biggest change over the last 20 years.

    • Paul says:

There are a lot of mistakes here Yingying. It is better to write less – but spend more time on each exercise. Keep writing with mistakes only makes it more difficult to correct them – it becomes a habit.

  8. bluebell says:

The ways in which people keep in contact have changed enormously nowadays due to the widely usage of internet, but for old people like my parents, because they don’t use computer, so the ways they keep in contact with people have little changes – always telephone, plus mobilephone in recent years.

    • Paul says:

Good, but there are some errors both in terms of grammar and naturalness – the corrections I have made address both areas: “the fact that the internet is now widely used” / “the ways they keep in touch with people haven’t changed very much..” “plus mobile phones”
